ADFG Weekly Fishing report, July 6, 2017: Sockeye are showing up off Summer’s Bay and at McLee’s. Counts at the McLee’s lake weir are very slow currently.. Not many other new reports but King and Halibut fishing has still been good by most reports! Crab fishing should be picking up as well and Lingcod season opened on July 1.
Regulation reminders:
- The bag limit for Unalaska Bay fresh and saltwaters is 5 salmon per day of which only 2 may be sockeye.
- The bag limit for the remainder of Unalaska Island is 5 salmon per day all of which may be sockeye or coho.
- Anglers are reminded that Town Creek (Iliuliuk) is closed to fish for sockeye year round.
- The saltwaters of Summer’s Bay are open to snagging, however, the freshwaters from the outlet of Summer’s Bay Lake to the ocean are closed to all sportfishing.
- All freshwaters of Unalaska Island are closed to snagging year round.
- Anglers are reminded that many of the creeks flowing into Unalaska Bay have closed waters for a portion of the drainage or all of the drainage in some cases. Be sure to keep an eye out for signs marking closed waters and to consult the Southwest Alaska Sportfish regulation booklet for a complete list of sport fishing regulations for Unalaska Bay.
Fishing reports:
- Reports of sockeye being caught in Reese Bay and Summer’s Bay are coming in but counts at McLee’s Lake are very low. Counts are posted on the ADFG website daily, so be sure to check it out for the latest information. Anglers are reminded that the Summer’s Bay bag limit is 2 sockeye per day and fishing is not allowed in Summer’s Bay creek.
- Trolling for king salmon has reportedly continues to be good with reports indicating fish have been plentiful inside and outside Unalaska Bay, with fish up to 30 lbs caught.
- King salmon will often follow schools of bait fish to feed and recent reports of large schools of sandlance should mean great fishing!
- Halibut fishing appears to be picking up and recent success has been reported off many local rock piles and capes. Halibut fishing should remain good throughout the summer.
- Crabbing appears to be slow so far but some reports of tanner’s being caught in Nateekin and Captain’s bays have come in.
- Dollies should be heading back to freshwater right now and through August. They can be caught in all local drainages open to fishing for dollies.
