NOTICE OF PUBLIC INPUT PERIOD FOR DESIGNATION OF OIL SPILL DISPERSANT AVOIDANCE AREA OFF THE COAST OF ALASKA
The US Coast Guard, Environmental Protection Agency and State of Alaska are seeking public input to identify off-shore locations where the use of oil spill dispersants should be avoided within a Preauthorization Area found in the Dispersant Use Plan for Alaska. After a crude oil discharge, these Avoidance Areas will guide decision-makers to ensure the benefits of dispersant use outweigh risks to the environment. There will be an informational meeting December 8, 2016 at the Unalaska City Council Chambers from 1:30- 4:30.
The public comment period ends January 9, 2017. After that date a technical committee of federal and State agency personnel will review the comments before recommending Avoidance Areas for Federal On-Scene Coordinator approval. Mail comments to P.O. Box 191 Seldovia, Alaska 99663. Call (907)299-3324 for more information. Information on Avoidance Areas and how to provide public comments is available on the project website: http://nukadraft.wixsite.com/avoidanceareas
