October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a nationwide effort to educate Americans about the issue of domestic violence.  Domestic violence affects millions of people each year, and Alaska has the highest rate of domestic violence per capita.

Here in Unalaska, we are lucky to a non profit called Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence (USAFV).  USAFV provides services to people impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and other crimes.  They offer crisis intervention, temporary shelter, and advocacy.  In October, KUCB teamed up with USAFV to produce a series of educational messages for local radio.  We also dedicated or October episode of Happy Healthy Unalaska to a discussion about domestic violence and local resources.

Audio of the conversation is available here:

Remember that USAFV operates a shelter and 24-hour crisis line.  They can be reached at 581-1500
