Marijuana supporters in Unalaska have submitted a petition to repeal an ordinance banning state-licensed pot businesses.
The proposal calls for a referendum on city ordinance 2016-03, which prohibits all types of marijuana businesses, including the cultivation, manufacturing, and retail sale of pot.
The petition does not specify any new regulations for a local marijuana industry. Determining those would still be up to the City of Unalaska.
Deputy City Clerk Roxanna Winters said the city received the petition late Tuesday. Winters could not confirm the number of signatures on the petition, but she said she'll work on verifying each name over the new few days.
According to the city, the petition needs at least 77 valid signatures from qualified voters. That's 25 percent of the votes cast in Unalaska's last regular election.
If the City Clerk certifies the petition, a referendum on the commercial pot ban will be added to the October ballot. If the petition does not have enough valid signatures, sponsors will have 10 days to gather additional names and re-submit the petition.
