Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault & Family Violence (USAFV) held the annual SOUP-OFF Fundraiser & Membership Meeting on Saturday, March 30, and it was a tremendous success, with about 135 people attending the event. USAFV was able to sell more than 80 memberships at the event, and between memberships/entry fees, auction sales, and door prize ticket sales, raised over $15,000 dollars!

The City of Unalaska's nonprofit funding requests are up more than 50 percent this year.

Driving the increase are two main factors: Half of the 12 applicants are asking for more than they received last year — and a new requester is asking for $391,784 in its first bid for city funds.

Thanks to a new direct flight, Unalaskans are bringing food and clothes to their northern neighbors on St. George Island, some 200 miles across the Bering Sea.

The community of 60 people has already received dozens of boxes filled with canned goods, winter clothing, and spare blankets.

"I can't thank the people enough in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor for caring about us," said Mayor Pat Pletnikoff of St. George. "It's pretty amazing."

Until now, Dr. André Rosay -- of the University Alaska Anchorage -- says there had been no accurate measurement of violence against women in Alaska.
