The storm that meteorologists warned could be bigger than 2014's Typhoon Nuri turned out to be less severe than predicted. At least here in Unalaska.

Meteorologist Luis Ingram at the National Weather Service office in Anchorage said Monday morning that Nuri took a different path than this weekend's storm.

As the superintendent of one of Alaska's smallest and most remote school districts, Connie Newman wears many hats. The Pribilof School District has 10 students at its school on St. George Island and 71 on St. Paul Island. The lightly inhabited, windswept islands sit 300 miles off Alaska's west coast in the Bering Sea.

After declining enrollment forced cutbacks two years ago, Newman took on the mantle of St. Paul School principal as well as district superintendent.

The Unalaska Convention and Visitor's Bureau has a new executive director. Randy Shinn II started in the job this week. On Monday evening he held a meet and greet at Burma Road Chapel to introduce himself to the community.

But many will remember Shinn from past jobs and time spent living on the island.

Shinn was born in Louisiana and raised in Arizona. He earned an undergraduate degree at the University of Washington in Seattle, and it was during a hiatus in those college years Shinn first came to Unalaska.

During the month of January, a non-profit program dedicated to nurturing small businesses is offering cost-free application reviews for the 2016 Aleutian Marketplace Competition.

Sponsored by the Aleutian Pribilof Island Community Development Association (APICDA) and the Aleut Corporation, the Aleutian Marketplace is a regional competition only open to current or former residents of Unalaska and 11 other Aleutian communities.
