A St. Paul student died at the island's school last week.

The 5th grader collapsed in a classroom during the school day, according to Superintendent Brett Agenbroad of the Pribilof Island School District.

"School employees provided first aid and promptly called emergency responders who provided assistance and emergency transport to a health care facility," said Agenbroad.

The child did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead. While the cause of death is still unknown, the state medical examiner is performing an autopsy.

Since 2008, the Pribilof School District has devoted a week of classes to scientific and environmental issues unfolding in its own region. Reasearchers from across North America visit St. Paul Island to teach students about the world around them.

This year, KUCB's Zoë Sobel and former KDLG reporter Mitch Borden also taught middle and high school students the basics of reporting — and by the end of class, they had written questions and conducted interviews with the visiting presenters.

While students head back to class across Alaska, the school on St. George Island has stayed closed.

District officials said it’s the latest casualty in a statewide trend where small, rural communities struggle to hold on to their kids.
