In Memoriam: Larry John Shaishnikoff

Long time Alaska resident Larry John Shaishnikoff passed away on July 12, 2017, at the age of 86, in Anchorage, Alaska. "A man of many hats" is how he is remembered by many.

In Unalaska, Alaska, Larry was born to parents Sergei Shaishnikoff and Alexandria Stepetin. He spent his early childhood playing outside on this rural island of the Aleutian archipelago with his siblings and friends. At age 11, he survived the bombing and evacuation of Dutch Harbor and despite such hardships he persevered and achieved a life worth telling.

In Memoriam: James Huguley

  James Huguley died June 24, 2017, in Unalaska, Alaska,where he'd lived for the past 33 years. He perished from cancer at age 69, and is remembered as a man of considerable occupational versatility, and who was well-known to many in various walks of life. He was born in Athens, Georgia, the second of ten children of James and Frances Huguley.

Military historian John Cloe has died. First reported by the Alaska Dispatch News (ADN), Cloe died at his home in Anchorage on Monday.

Michael Gerard Miller, 27, of East Quogue, NY, left this world on August 9, 2016. He was born in Southampton, NY, on December 19th, 1988, the son of Harry and Nancy Miller. He attended East Quogue Elementary School and then Westhampton Beach High School, where he excelled on the wrestling team and in art classes. After graduating in 2007 he joined the U.S. Coast Guard, achieving the rank of Petty Officer Second Class, MST.

Jerah Chadwick, a resident of Unalaska from 1982 to 2008, passed away June 7 in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by his loving sister and family. Jerah was the Alaska State Writer Laureate from 2004 to 2006. He was a poet of astonishing powers whose best work grew out of his years in the Aleutian Islands.
