The number of positive COVID-19 cases among crew members on the American Triumph grew by 79 Sunday, bringing the tally of confirmed cases on the American Seafoods trawler to 85. 

The Seattle-based vessel — which has an onboard processing plant and holds a crew of 119 people — arrived in Unalaska/Dutch Harbor on Thursday, with seven crew members reporting symptoms consistent with COVID-19.

A Bering Sea trawler currently docked in Dutch Harbor has reported six cases of COVID-19 among its 119 crew members, officials said Friday.  

The cases are onboard the American Triumph, which is operated by Seattle-based American Seafoods. 

Last month, the company announced that more than 100 crew members on three of the company's six vessels had tested positive for the virus.

Alaska state and local health officials are warning of dangerously high levels of toxins in shellfish, after a person died of paralytic shellfish poisoning from mussels and snails in Unalaska.

"Right now, the levels are high enough that just one mussel could kill someone," said Sarah Spelsberg, a physician assistant at Iliuliuk Family and Health Services.

City officials reported a new positive case of COVID-19 in Unalaska Tuesday, bringing the total number of positive local cases to ten.

The individual who tested positive is an employee of Pacific Stevedoring, a local company that handles cargo and terminal operations in the Port of Dutch Harbor. They arrived on the island on June 25 and immediately went into quarantine per local protocol, according to city officials.

Blue mussels and snails (whelks) collected from Unalaska Bay on July 4 registered nearly three times the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxin limit for safe consumption.

 

A recent report of some of the highest ever recorded levels of PSP toxins in butter clams taken from the Alaska Peninsula community of King Cove in June prompted officials to test locally, according to Melissa Good, the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Agent in Unalaska.
