TACOMA FIRE DEPARTMENT

A 233-foot floating processor owned by Trident Seafoods caught fire shortly before midnight Wednesday. The processor, Aleutian Falcon, was docked at the Port of Tacoma, Washington.

Trident has said the vessel is a total loss, according to multiple news outlets.

Dutch Harbor's commercial herring season is off to a slow start.

Since opening July 1, seiners have harvested about one quarter of their 1,810-ton quota in the Unalaska and Akutan districts.

"Some of the reports I get from the processors say the fish are deeper than normal," said biologist Lucas Stumpf of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. "They're having a little difficulty catching them in the volumes that they're used to, just because the fish seem to be deeper at the moment."

The commercial herring fishery is on hold in Unalaska — because no one can find the fish.

The herring season opened more than a week ago. So far, fishermen haven't had any luck, even with a spotter pilot searching from above.

"There's been no appreciable harvest at all," said Frank Kelty on the Unalaska Fisheries Report. "The fish appear to be well offshore and in very deep water where the seiners can't get to them."
