After a roughly seven-month search, Unalaska's clinic has a new CEO.

Melanee Tiura signed a three-year contract with Iliuliuk Family and Health Services (IFHS) last month. She takes over the position from interim director Will Rodgers, who stepped in after the resignation of former director James Kaech.

KUCB's Hope McKenney sat down with Tiura to ask about the financial status of the island's nonprofit community health center — and where she hopes to take it.

When Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced a series of vetoes to the state budget in June, Unalaska stood to lose about $1.34 million in funding for local organizations including the city, school district, and clinic.

Changes are underway in Unalaska's health care landscape.

About a year ago, the island's two main providers agreed to streamline their services in an effort to avoid duplication, cut costs, and improve access for all community members.

Charles Fagerstrom is health director at the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA), which has long provided care to tribal members around the region.

Fagerstrom sat down with KUCB's Laura Kraegel to provide an update on APIA's progress in partnering with the local clinic, Iliuliuk Family and Health Services (IFHS).
