In January, Amazon started collecting sales tax on online purchases made in Unalaska — a move that took residents and city officials by surprise.

KUCB's Laura Kraegel has more on the development that's expected to put new revenue in city coffers by the end of the month.

Update: Before the Alaska Municipal League could complete its study, Amazon started collecting sales tax on online purchases made in Unalaska. For more on that development, click here.  

The Unalaska City Council wants more information before it decides whether to tax local purchases from online retailers like Amazon.

That's why councilors voted last week to contribute $5,000 to the Alaska Municipal League (AML).

The Unalaska City Council is not meeting Tuesday, Nov. 13. 

The regularly scheduled session has been canceled, because councilors and other city officials are attending the Alaska Municipal League's annual conference in Anchorage.

The City Council will hold its next meeting Nov. 27.
