Officials at Unalaska's Fire and Public Safety Departments said they couldn't determine the cause of Tuesday's avalanche that killed 21-year-old snowmachiner Trey Henning.

But according to Acting Fire Chief Mike Hanson, there was significant new snowfall on the mountain near the Overland Drive quarry, where Henning was riding alone at the time of the accident.

More than 100 people gathered Saturday at Unalaska's high school to mourn the death of 18-year-old Alexis Magalong, a senior who was reported missing and later found dead over the weekend.

Superintendent John Conwell said he'd known Magalong since she was three years old. He remembered her as a "remarkable young lady" and skilled basketball player.

Following the death of an Unalaska high school student, providers with the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association (APIA) say mental health and counseling services are available by calling 359-2743.

Providers can speak with Unalaskans over the phone or help them to set up face-to-face appointments.

There will also be resources available Sunday, Feb. 9 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Unalaska's high school, as well as during school hours next week.

It's been almost a month since a plane crashed at Unalaska's airport, killing one passenger and injuring more than a dozen others.

The accident required a major emergency response involving city staffers and volunteers, members of UniSea's safety team, and many others. While it was a big task for the community, local officials have said they're pretty happy with the effort.
