Alaska Airlines Preparing To Start Service To Cold Bay

Berett Wilber/KUCB

Officials with Alaska Airlines say they will soon start serving Cold Bay.

The airline is in the process of sending equipment to the rural airport, and expects regular service to begin in the "next few weeks," according to spokesman Tim Thompson.

Alaska Airlines does not fly planes into Unalaska. Instead, the city has relied on the now-bankrupt air carrier RavnAir Group. But earlier this month, the citylost all commercial air service following months of flight uncertainties.

Going forward, the community will likely have to continue to rely on charter service until officials work out a permanent flight solution between Unalaska and Cold Bay.

Thompson confirmed that Alaska Airlines is coordinating with Grant Aviation —a regional airline that serves the town of Kenai, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Bristol Bay, and the Aleutian Chain — to ensure short, linked service between Unalaska's Tom Madsen Airport and Cold Bay. From there, Alaska Airlines will connect to Anchorage.
