Saint Paul Closes Harbor Amid Coronavirus Concerns

Saint Paul has passed an emergency ordinance closing its harbor with few exceptions.

The April 13 order still allows ships "whose home port is St. Paul; carrying cargo containers or fuel; delivering snow crab; picking up or dropping off crab pots; owned and operated by the federal or state government; exempt from restriction under the Alaska Small Community Emergency Travel Order, or granted access under state or federal law."

According to the ordinance, all vessels must still check in with the harbormaster to receive approval before entering the city's harbor.

Ships entering may be subject to further regulation, which could include requiring crew members don personal protective equipment (PPE) — like face masks — and other precautions against spreading coronavirus.

The order is set to expire on May 15. No confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported in the Pribilof Islands.
