Unalaska's Fire Department Responds To Large Brush Fire Past Morris Cove

Officials at Unalaska's fire department are monitoring a large brush fire that started Friday afternoon out past Morris Cove.

Patrick Shipp, fire chief at the Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services, said two kayakers notified the department at around 4:30 p.m. that a fire was burning in a steep ravine on the far side of the cove. Upon arrival, crews determined it was inaccessible to fire personnel.

"The good thing about all this is, with the prevailing winds and being surrounded by water on three sides of the fire, it's probably going to take care of itself," said Shipp. "It may burn up over the hill, and if the wind switches direction, we'll have crews there to take care of it when it gets to a point where we can access it."

Shipp said there's no threat to life or property at this time. Fire personnel are standing by and are ready to respond if anything changes.
