Last Friday, the Raider Swim Team had their last home meet of the season, and senior night. The meet started at 6:00 pm with team introductions and recognition of the seniors.
Jonathan Le and John Khongsuk were the only seniors on the team, both who have been competing for Unalaska since their freshman year. The senior swimmers had their names called and received flowers and a gift from their teammates. Their coach read their future plans and their favorite memories from being on the swim team. Their families also went up to the front of the pool deck to take pictures.
The Unalaska City High School Band, featuring recently honored John Khongsuk on the trumpet, played the National Anthem. With that, the meet had begun.
This meet, in typical Raider Swim Team fashion, had some excitement with records broken. Sophomore Sasha Rankin set a new school record in the Individual Medley with a time of 2:44.91. This was her first time getting up on the record board. Adam Nguyen, also a just a sophomore, set a new school record in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 52.71, breaking his old record by almost an entire second.
The last home meet concluded traditionally. The team pushed their coaches, Erin Reinders and Bill Homka, into the pool and everyone else jumped in to join in the fun.
The Raiders’ next swim meet will be the Region 3 Meet in Palmer. After that, state qualifying swimmers will compete at the state-wide meet at Bartlett High School in Anchorage.
