  • A series of earthquakes struck the Aleutian Islands on Saturday. A magnitude 6.3 earthquake was recorded 56 miles south of Atka on Saturday morning just after 9 a.m. The quake's epicenter was at a depth of 3.1 miles. Three more earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 and above were also recorded, but those had epicenters far deeper into the earth's crust. On Saturday alone, the Alaska Earthquake Center tracked over 20 earthquakes in the Aleutians. No tsunamis were reported. While our area is currently seismically active, there has been a steady decrease in thermal activity at Shishaldin volcano on Unimak Island. Late last week the Alaska Volcano Observatory downgraded the volcano's alert level from advisory to normal.

  • On Tuesday the Historic Preservation Committee meets at 6 p.m. On the agenda is a work session and presentation by DOWL, a consulting firm the city has hired to assist with the creation of a new inventory of historic sites.

  • On Thursday, March 17, the city's platting authority meets for a public hearing on the Guitard subdivision on Steward Road. Those wishing to weigh in on the preliminary blueprint of that subdivision should go to City Hall at 2 p.m.

  • Later in the evening on the 17th, the Planning Commission and Platting Board meets at 6 p.m. There are just two items on the agenda: the selection of chair and vice chair; and a resolution to allow commission members to participate in meetings telephonically.
