Monday News Briefs

  • Unalaska's DMV office reopened today. The office is located in the lobby of the Public Safety Building, and is open from nine a.m. to four p.m. Monday through Thursday. The DMV clerk, Vickie Longan, says those wishing to visit the office on Fridays should call first as she usually schedules driving tests for that day. The office was closed for the month of February due to a staffing shortage.

  • On Monday the Unalaska City School Board invites public input on a draft school year calendar for the 2017/2018 school year. A meeting is scheduled at 5:15 pm in the high school library.

  • The board of directors for USAFV - or Unalaskans Against Sexual Assault and Family Violence - meets Monday evening. The board is scheduled to review financial reports, accept board member applications and talk about the soup off event and the organization's strategic plan. The USAFV board meets at 5:30 p.m. at the public library.

  • March 1 at midnight is the deadline for artists to apply for a Rasmuson Foundation grant. Each year the philanthropic nonprofit gives out monetary awards to help working artists take time for "experimentation, education and personal reflection," according to the foundation's website. Artists in any stage of their careers are eligible but must have lived in Alaska at least for the past two years. More information can be found at www.rasmuson.org.
