Last weekend, on Friday September 1st, the Unalaska Raider Swim Team had their first meet of the year at our very own Aquatics Center. Some exciting new technology has been added to the pool including an electronic screen with swimmers’ names and their times as they swim. All of the swimmers’ times start with the beep of the speaker. Then, when they finish, they touch a metal pad that records their time and displays it on the screen overhead. Backup timers are present to make sure that swimmers’ times aren’t lost if a malfunction occurs.

The meet began at 6:00 pm. The entire team sang the national anthem, which was something new at this meet. The swimmers were announced and the meet commenced.

A number of school records have been set by the Raider Swim Team the past couple years, and this year is shaping up to be no different. In the first event, the relay team consisted of Adam Nguyen, Nick Upton, Amiel Fernandez, and Jonathan Le. The team proceeded to break their own record in the 200 Medley Relay.

Jonathan Le, UCSD senior and captain of the team had a lot to say about the team’s recent accomplishments and the coming year.

When asked about the record, Le said, “Swimming has been a part of my life for a long time and I’ve always wanted to be up on those record boards. To do it my senior year, again, it’s surreal.”

Le was also excited about the future of their season and his senior year as captain.

“I mean, it’s only the first meet of the year, too, so just think about what else we could do with the rest of the season," Le said. "I’m very honored to be the captain. I’ve been swimming since I was in Kindergarten and the pool has been like my second home. To be captain of the sport I love the most, and to be able to help my teammates, who are like my family, to get better it’s an amazing feeling.”

The Raider Swim Team will be travelling for a meet in Homer on September 7th  and the following weekend they will be swimming in Soldotna. Their next home meet will be on September 29th. That will also be senior night.

Great job Raiders!
