City officials reported a new positive case of COVID-19 in Unalaska Friday, bringing the positive local case count to 98.

The individual who tested positive is a family member of an employee of Alyeska Seafoods, one of four fish processing plants in Unalaska.

The city reports that the family member arrived in Unalaska on August 11, and in accordance with the company's COVID-19 mitigation plan, went immediately into quarantine.

Upon receiving the positive test result, the individual was placed in isolation per state public health guidance.

Pursuant to the company's COVID-19 response protocols, Alyeska employee family members are quarantined away from employees, the city said in a statement.

"We’ve been very impressed with the comprehensive plans that the companies have had in place which encompasses family members of employees," said Melanee Tiura, clinic director at Iliuliuk Family and Health Services. "Once again, the 14-day quarantine strategy has kept us all safe, whether the strategy is employed by industry or by community members."

To date, this marks 98 positive cases of COVID-19 in Unalaska. In addition to Friday's positive case, a family member of an employee of Westward Seafoods contracted the virus in another state and tested positive during their travel-related quarantine in Unalaska in late July.

85 cases have been among American Seafoods crew members, eight have been among Icicle Seafoods employees, one was a Resolve-Magone Marine employee last week, one was a Pacific Stevedoring employee in early July, and one was anemployee of the Alaska Marine Highway System who tested positive for the virus in Unalaska on the M/V Tustumena's first ferry trip of the season in early June.
