School Board Seat D: Josh Good

Josh Good has been a resident of Unalaska since 2011, and has been involved in many community centered organizations and activities in both professional and volunteer roles.

Good moved to Unalaska from Fairbanks, Alaska, where he graduated from the University of Alaska Fairbanks with a degree in Education and taught kindergarten from 2009-11.

Upon his arrival in Unalaska, Good was employed as a substitute teacher and classroom aide which provided him the opportunity to work at nearly all levels of both schools within Unalaska City School District. Good continued his teaching career the next year as one of UCSD’s 6th grade teachers, and bounced between teaching 5th and 6th grade until the end of the 2016-17 school year when he transitioned to the school’s Career and Technical Education/ Industrial Arts teacher. As the shop teacher Good worked with students in grades 7 through 12, teaching welding, automobile, small engine, and woodworking classes. At the end of the 2018-19 School year Good resigned his position at Unalaska City School to be a stay at home parent for his newborn daughter.

While employed with Unalaska City School, Good was active within the school in many ways outside of his classrooms. He worked with school board members, administrators, teachers, and parents as a member of the Language Arts Curriculum, Science Curriculum, and Math Curriculum Development Committees; helped to design and implement the current format of The Dockside Discovery annual field trip for 1st through 6th grade; assisted coaching the cross country team; has led the SkillsUSA skilled trades based competition team; led an after school auto club, and has been active helping with events including science fair, poetry out loud, and tsunami bowl.

Within the community of Unalaska, Good had been involved with several non-profits including time as a board member with the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Unalaska Chapter of the Alaska State Firefighter’s Association, both of which have allowed him opportunities to learn and understand the workings of public boards and their procedures though both experience and board related trainings.

Good is an active volunteer firefighter with the Unalaska Fire Department, an active member and scuba diver with the Unalaska Divers Association, and has been a volunteer DJ for KUCB. He enjoys time outdoors, exploring the waterways of Unalaska via skiff and Kayak, wandering the beaches and tundra, and skiing the local hillsides when snow levels permit.

Good says, ”I am qualified for a seat on the school board because as a professional in Alaska education, I’ve gained insight into and directly interacted with many of the systems and procedures within our state, district, and our schools’ classrooms that affect our administrators, teachers, and students. Most of all I believe that the school board will benefit from my experience and the perspective I’ve gained while working in our schools.”
