Final Deadline For Unalaska's Dock Renovation Pushed To Jan. 15

The completion dates for Unalaska's dock renovation have been delayed again.

Last week, city officials granted a two-week extension requested by Turnagain Marine Construction, the contractor hired to replace a pair of aging docks at the Unalaska Marine Center.

That request puts the $39 million project six weeks behind its original schedule, given a previous extension approved in August.

The new substantial completion date is Dec. 14, when the bulk of the work must be done. All work must be complete by the new final deadline, Jan. 15.

Despite the delay, Ports Director Peggy McLaughlin said Unalaska will be ready for the busy winter fishing season.

"The city dock will be available for vessel usage," she said. "Even at this point, we could do some offloads, so [construction] should not impact the regular schedule for 'A' season."

While the extension isn't expected to increase the cost of the renovation, the City Council has approved a $3.8 million side project at the port.

Northern Alaska Contractors has been hired to create about two acres of leasable flat land next to the docks by May 1, 2019.
