Unalaska’s haunted house opens on Friday in the Burma Road Chapel, and the Department of Parks, Culture & Recreation’s Teen Council is getting ready.

Teen Council members Shanelle Palma and Nikki Amora are haunted house co-chairs. They didn’t want to give anything away, but said it would be full of “twists and turns,” with different areas, inspired by horror films.

All the themes are based on movies you’ve probably watched, they’re all horror movies,” said Palma.

Some are classic, some are new,” added Amora.

The event will take place at the Burma Road Chapel on Friday and Saturday night from 8 to 10 p.m.

Additionally, families with younger children can attend a “lights on” event on Saturday evening from 6 to 7, when the lights will stay on for a less frightening experience.

Teen Council Vice President Gerwin Mateo said he looks forward to the haunted house every year.

“I’ve gone for many years. It's always spooky,” Mateo said. “It’s a nice feeling for me, personally.”

The event was cancelled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amora said she’s excited that it’s back.

I feel like with COVID we haven't had a lot of events,” Amora said. “I think this will bring everyone together, bring the Halloween spirit.”

And while it’s sure to be a fun time, the teenagers warn: don’t let your guard down.

“It’ll leave you traumatized,” said Amora.

The haunted house will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings from 8-10. The “lights on” event takes place Saturday from 7-8.

$5 tickets are available at the door.
