Unalaska Preschool temporarily closes after child tests positive for COVID-19

The preschool’s afternoon session will remain open since no students from the later session were in contact with the child who tested positive, according to Swint.

The Unalaska preschool’s morning session will be closed until Sept. 13, according to school administrators.

The class was cancelled Wednesday after the district was notified a child tested positive for COVID-19, said School Superintendent Dr. Robbie Swint Jr. Out of an “abundance of caution” they decided to shut down the class to allow people to isolate.

“We felt compelled — after speaking with the clinic, and Mr. Wilson and I looked at our Smart Start and mitigation plan — that it was best just to close it down, call all the parents and let them know what was going on,” Swint said.

He added that he isn’t aware of any other positive cases among preschoolers at this time.

The preschool’s afternoon session will remain open since no students from the later session were in contact with the child who tested positive, according to Swint. However, the school has put additional “precautionary measures” in place for the later class.

“We are really looking at our Smart Start Plan for 2021 to 2022,” he said. “There's going to always be different scenarios that will come up that are not on the plan, but we are looking at everything and making sure that we're doing our due diligence to inform the parents, teachers and students that are involved.”
