Lady Raiders Bring Home Title In Seldovia

Jennifer Tungul

The Lady Raiders traveled to the end of the Kenai Peninsula to play in the Seldovia Sea Otters Girls' Basketball Tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Raiders squared off first with Seldovia in Game 1 on Thursday night. The team didn’t disappoint, starting the game by rattling off ten straight points, displaying a good outside shooting performance against Seldovia's player-to-player pressure. The Lady Raiders led 30-15 going into half. A well-rounded surge of offense was lead by seniors Sue Yoon with 11 points and Alanna Kochuten with 10 points.  The final score was 48 to 34.

Friday's Game 2 action was against the JV Homer Mariners. The Mariners had no answers for the Lady Raiders' fast tempo and passing game against the zone. Leading scorers were senior Sue Yoon with 11 points, freshman Kiara Villamor with 8 points, and senior Alanna Kochuten with 8 points. The final score 43 to 18.

In the final game on Saturday morning the Lady Raiders brought home the title with a win against Cooke Inlet Academy. The Lady Raiders displayed early shooting troubles but at end of the third quarter, the resiliency was evident with Louie Tan closing out the quarter with a corner three pointer.  Then, the Lady Raiders rattled off six points unanswered, starting the fourth quarter strong. The Raiders won the game 38 to 22. The leading scorers were sophomore Alyssa Tungul with 10 points and senior Alanna Kochuten with 8 points.

The All-Tournament Team included the Lady Raiders' Sue Yoon, Alanna Kochuten and Kiara Villamor.

Meanwhile, in Homer, the boys also went undefeated over the weekend.  In their first game, they swept Homer with a final score of 57 to 24.   On Friday, they were up against Ninilchik and fought hard for their 60 to 47 point win.  Their Saturday game closed with 45 points for the Unalaska Raiders; 22 points for Bristol Bay.  Senior Ben Enlow made the All-Tourney Team and freshman Trevor Wilson was the tournament's MVP.

Both teams will take on Glennallen this Friday night in the Raider Dome in Unalaska.  The basketball action starts at 6:30 pm.
