Fight for Unalaska District Champions for Battle of the Books Begins!

Mary Aldeguer-Lopez

On January 27, 2016, Eagle View Elementary held the first of a series of Unalaska School district’s Battle of the Books.

Congratulations to the winning 3rd/4th grade team members: Matheas Lopez, Vanessa Go, Allyssa Sevilla, and Truman Kington.

America’s Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3 to 12. The program’s goal is to encourage reading. Every year, the organizers release a list of age appropriate books. Participating schools are required to have all the books available in their library. Students are put into teams and meet with their coaches throughout the season. Teams can have a maximum of four members. But in the state tournament, only three students are allowed to compete with the fourth member being an alternate.

The 3rd /4th coach is Sharon O’Malley, the 5th/6th grade coach is Amber Wood, and the Junior High coach is Amy Purevsuren.

On the day of the “battle,” teams earn points by correctly answering questions about the books from the list. The teams with the most points emerge as winners.

"It was fun," said coach Ms. O'Malley. "The battle came down to a tie between two teams that had to be broken with overtime questions".

The 5th/6th district competition will be on February 3 with three teams competing for the title. The junior high competition will be on February 8 with 3 teams. The winning groups will compete telephonically against other districts in the statewide competitions. Battles will be on February 22 for high school, February 23 for junior high, February 24 for 5/6 grade and February 25 for 3/4 grade.
