It's too soon to say whether the appointment of a new state corrections commissioner will affect the inmate work program that Unalaska is scheduled to join this winter.

New Gov. Mike Dunleavy announced Wednesday that he's picked state Rep.-Elect Nancy Dahlstrom to lead the Department of Corrections (DOC).

Does she expect to make any changes to the Transition to Work program, which is on track to employ four prisoners at UniSea's fish processing plant in Unalaska?

Unalaska’s annual Poetry Out Loud competition took place Tuesday at 6pm in the high school auditorium. Poetry Out Loud is a nation-wide competition in which students pick a poem, memorize it, and recite it in front of judges and an audience. The competition is based on a student’s thorough and accurate memorization of the poem and their personalized and dynamic recitation.

The architects designing Unalaska's library renovation are considering a new option.

Rather than expanding the building south toward the senior center, as initially proposed, they're looking at expanding it to the north.

Principal Architect Brian Meissner — of firm ECI Hyer — proposed the idea last week while updating the community on the project, expected to grow the library by about 3,000 square feet.
